A family friend who has sinced passed on bought me this book when the Wallabies first held the Web Ellis Cup aloft, way back in 1991. Incidentally, the captain that day was Nick Farr-Jones, a lad from the local Sutherland Shire. This would have had to have been the Golden Age of Australian rugby with the likes of Michael Lynagh, Tim Horan, Jason Little and David Campese rounding out a blistering backline.
The Wallabies won again in 1999 but it has been a considerable drought since. True, they did well to make the final last time up in 2015 in the face of considerable adversity, both on & off the field, where they eventually were beaten by a well-drilled NZ side.
What about this year? Again, controversy has dogged the campaign before a ball has been kicked, but the pool group should allow the team to work themselves into the tournament. Wales beat Australia last time up in a dour game 9-6 so their confidence shall be sky high but other than that, the Australians should easily book a place in the quarter-finals. However, should they top the pool, they can avoid a likely match up with nemisis England, although a game against Argentina is no certainty. Should they get over that hurdle, New Zealand and South Africa (not necessarily that order) will be in waiting and it will require a monumental effort for the Wallabies to pull through to take the Crown.
