One of the things that is thrown around so much in practice today is that it doesn’t matter how something is done just that it gets done. This couldn’t be further from the truth. We often assume that someone has the movement competency to just accomplish whatever they may be trying to do. Recently I had the opportunity to work with a friend who is a former NFL athlete. Why is that important? Simply stated he has a long history in the training field. We were able to identify a slight variant in his pull technique that was causing issues for his low back. This was something that we were able to fix rapidly because of his body awareness and control but highlights the point. We can’t take for granted that someone has movement capacity or awareness. .
Discussing this issue with colleagues I find some consistency; those who have a training background will hunt for every nuance in a pattern and break down the individuals movement set. Those that don’t have a training background will say that it doesn’t matter. Both can be very good at the job of identifying dysfunction and working in rehabilitation; only those who fight for detail in every aspect will help to carry someone back to their full potential. .
We fail at the margins or our experience. Expand your envelope to create the best patient care possible. .
