Chureito Pagoda in Shimoyoshida provides the perfect view of Mt. Fuji. Getting there from Tokyo is a little effort but worth it. If you’re someone who plans ahead, the bus from Shinjuku Station is probably the easiest but reservations are required, especially on weekends. The more spontaneous option involves trains from Tokyo or Shinjuku Stations. No reservations required and really just like taking a subway (swipe in with your Suica or Pasmo card) and take the Chuo line to Otsuki. At Otsuki you pay for a ticket on the privately owned Fujukyuko line. Get off at Shimoyoshida station and it’s about a 2 kilometer walk up the hill to the shrine. Alternatively you can stay on the train and go all the way to Kawaguchiko to see lake Kawaguchi and take a scenic boat tour for viewing Mt. Fuji. There’s also a cable car that takes you to a viewing point from a neighboring mountain nearby. All is walkable from station. After that it’s a quick cab or train ride back to Shimoyoshida. The best light for viewing Mt Fuji is early (before noon) which means you have to leave Tokyo by around 6:00 or 7:00 AM since travel time is around 3 hours. I got a late start so had to contend with some harsh direct sunlight but still beautiful.
