It sets out to be regenerative. To add more than it takes across the domains of existence.
If we aim to be regenerative in all things, as an act, through design, by intention, then we will certainly get sustainability.
It is helpful to be sustainable, but it is not sufficient for what the world needs now. Too often we do ‘check box’ corporate sustainability. A partial act to appease a client story.
It is not enough. It is applying a pretty dressing to a deeply festering wound.
To become regenerative at every level is a disruption to every system deigned by man.
Indeed unless we disrupt, breakdown and reconstruct new models – capitalism, currency, governance, politics, enterprise design, accounting, what we measure – we are simply reapplying the pretty dressing and hoping for a second order phase state change.
All the while the wound festers in ever increasing ways towards a tipping point that will be irreversible once reached. (We may have already crossed it.) The truth is uncomfortable. It pulls the rug from under our feet. It liquifies solid ground. Our identity, education, status, privilege and wealth are threatened.
So we fight to hold onto the last vestiges of the old. We plaster the fester with a pretty sustainable bandaid.
Nature is regenerative by design. We are nature. Time to act like it.
After realisation kicked in that Biotech was not as sexy career as Joeann thought it would be, (bored being stuck in a lab everyday looking in a microscope and writing reports on germs) she ventured into recruitment because she’s always been a people person and like’s helping people.
Joeann’s statement: There’s nothing like the thrill of a candidate’s enthusiastic “Yes!” to an offer, and an equally pleased hiring manager who just hired a superstar.
We put an offer to Joeann on the same day we met. She joined us 2 days later! 😍
When she’s not on the job, Joeann loves walking her adorable dog called Lola and helps with finding homes to rescued dogs. She’s a big fan of Avatar movie and can’t wait for the next Stranger Things series to start on Netflix.
A system requires a delineation of what is in the system and what is outside of the system.
A system holds space. It has clear boundaries that define it.
Designed with comprehensive consideration, a system creates the field within the system to birth what it intends. I call this Enterprise Architecture.
Form is the shape of what is being created.
If your child has incredible musical abilities they might be expressed in a thousand different forms. From piano to hip hop, to singing, to a combination of many.
Our job is to create the environment/system into which the form is expressed. That form can and will change as the environment in which the system lives changes.
If we are attached to form, if we want our musical child to only play the piano, we are imposing our intention (shape) into the child. This limits their optionality…their ability to make a sovereign choice about how they express their musical ability.
Our job as steward leaders is not to impose form onto what is being birthed, rather to steward the system for the creation itself to lead its own form.
In almost all enterprises, we focus on the form and neglect the design of the system - the field that will give our creation the highest opportunity for success.
A great parent, gardener or farmer all knows that if you want to cultivate extraordinary, focus on the ecosystem, the soil, the environment…the field.
Then get to work on defining form - allowing it to adapt and change as the conditions adapt and change. *For more on this, see The Enterprise Architecture Masterclass.

Men with influence and intellectual authority have the ability to consciously and intentionally amplify gender ‘other’ – those who are not being seen and heard because of gender bias.
Often men themselves do not even realise they have this bias.
Look around you. Look at the panel for an event. Mostly men? All men?
Look at the Board or executive composition? The leadership in a political party.
Or the team at a startup.
How easy is it to fall back to the old conversation of meritocracy – that these are the best people for the job.
Changing the game is not as easy as skipping down the yellow brick road throwing daffodils. You need to work at it. You need to seek, find, amplify, elevate.
It’s uncomfortable. It feels risky. You might feel threatened. Your role might change. Yep, your role will change.
And if you are the next male guru wanna be…the next super hero. Please sit back down. Find a gender ‘other’ to amplify and become a superhero for doing this instead.
It might not feel fair…because this is your time after all. Welcome to the thousand year history of women/other and it not being fair.
Truth is the men have been sucking all the oxygen for way too long, often unconsciously. Often really good men, with much to offer. It is past time to restore the balance of polarity to our human experience.
Give the other a chance and watch the world become a better place.

Part of growing up, which is a forever adventure, is to become wiser as to which debates we engage. “Pick our battles.” We might spend all of our energy, passion, time, commitment debating to stop a new coal mine, knowing that it is a technology that is past it relevance, knowing that the Earth cannot abide a single other ounce of fossil fuel atmosphere cancer.
Or we might debate how to make the communities and people affected by loss of work and dignity more able to transition to an economy that supports them and their families, while ensuring we have a world with a future.
At the political level there is a vested interest in keeping people debating the wrong things. It is the magicians distraction, playing us perfectly.
There might be a reason humans have been gifted a mind, heart, gut interconnected.
Perhaps it is time we used our extraordinary capacity and skills attending to co-creating a world with a future – where all human and Earth dignity and respect is foundational to all of our endeavours.
If this is where we invest our energy and time, what then do we need to debate?
Our current models say we are winning, but we are losing
We are measuring and celebrating the wrong things.
GDP measures nothing more than the speed with which stuff and money pass through the economy, all the while excluding millions of hours of unpaid labour, and the minimum of $4.7trillion cost EVERY year of harm to our natural capital - a cost that is ignored by the ‘titans’ of industry as they bloat in excess while the effect of their efforts burns the world for all, including themselves.
What else might we measure?
New Zealand has made a bold start. Kate Raworth’s work on Doughnut Economics proposes a different lens.
What might we measure and celebrate?
Access for all to clean water, clean air, healthy soil, education, health care?
The all-in-accounting cost of everything we make?
The return to a world where the gap between the wealthy and everyone else is almost non existent? (In studies on societal collapse, an increased divide between the wealthy and the poor is one of three common elements that bring about collapse. And to be clear, collapse affects everyone, including those who have much.) The amount of Earth (land and oceans) secured from any form of exploitation and extraction…returned to the Commons?
The reduction in animal extinction rates?
The reduced need for arms/munitions/guns/weapons of war?
Communities that have 100% waste recycling, renewable energy, and local food production?
Perhaps it is past time to hold our bloated CEO’s as the Gods set to save us? (Elon Musk gets paid 40,000 times more than the average worker…on what planet is this something to be admired?) Perhaps they are indeed part of the problem?
What would you like to see measured? And how do we create enterprises that hold these measures as the whole point?
Humans love problem solving. Yet the truth is that most of the time the problem/solution ecology creates a reflexive impulse.
A reflexive impulse is just that. A reflex. Enacted without thoughtful comprehensive consideration.
Before we jump into solutions…perhaps instead understand the problem? As in really understand it. Know the history, bring in a diversity of people affected by the problem, listen…and listen again.
Listen to your own judgements. Know your own blind spots. Be very wary of the ‘expert’ response, even if it is yours.
Bring in a diversity of people to solve the problem. Apply the law of synergy, where one plus one might equal one thousand.
Stand in the future where the problem is solved. What is evident? What problems might the solution beget? (It will surely do this.) Are the new problems ones you want? Do they negate the initial problem? Or do they create more problems than you started with?
This is not an easy process. It requires rigour. Comprehensive thinking. Radical honesty. Community. Robust debate and disruptive processes. Conflict and disagreement.
It is also creative and messy and joyous for those who love inhabiting the question a problem asks.
Be aware of the reflexive solutions. Pause, step back…repeat.
As I gaze across the Pacific, its waters lake like on this morning, the sun not yet cresting the horizon, I think about people.
Almost everyone I meet wants to do good. Good work, good art, good citizenship, good parenting, good relationships.
The artefact of life, mostly constructed by humans, has the ability to take the desire to do good and turn it upon itself. Our capitalist system, economy, what we measure, how we educate, the labour market, finance, land ownership…
When people are given the opportunity to show up in their brilliance, to raise their voice, offer their skill and their heart, knowing they will be revered and respected for their contribution, not exploited and extracted from…we see the gloriousness of humanity.
We need to design for this as the outcome. We need to design for humans to be able to bring their best.
This is entirely possible. As architects of the future, we get to choose.

A report by Trucost, commissioned by the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, found that if environmental costs are counted, almost no industry is profitable.
Perhaps we might pause and think about that?
If we take the all-in-accounting cost for the Earth to make the raw ingredients, for the tree to grow, the soil to be enriched, the forest to build its complex ecosystem, if we then factor in the costs of post use, commonly known as waste or pollution, then we might rethink our businesses.
Someone will pay. Eventually. Or sooner than we have considered. 7 million people die each year from air pollution…and it affects every continent. 7 million!
I refuse to believe that the wonder of the human mind cannot solve for designing enterprises that profit in all domains, not to the extremes of greed that we see as the ‘holy grail,’ while also taking into account from day one the all-in-accounting costs.
This transcends the ‘circular economy’ which is an advance, but still incomplete, and has been co-opted by many as the new green wash.
This is a big challenge…I think we are up to it.
I hope you will join me as we become the map makers of the new models that factor the all-in-costs from day one. *Natural Capital at Risk, http://trucost.com?utm_campaign=meetedgar&utm_medium=social&utm_source=meetedgar.com

Doing more with less, ultimately everything with nothing.
This is one of Bucky Fullers Generalised Principles, true in all cases in our physical universe. (Perhaps not at the quantum level, or outside the earths atmosphere.) It is the direction of evolutions arrow.
However, it is not to be confused with too much efficiency, which creates brittleness. Or too much diversity and novelty, which creates disorder.
There is a sweet spot…a place where efficiency and diversity meet and dance. The dance is evident by the coherence created…
The effort to make everything super efficient, super conformist, predictable, regular, measurable, precise…squeezes out the diversity, novelty, emergence, ideation..
The effort to be rebel ruleless and crazy chaotic squeezes out the efficient.
Both are required to meet and dance.
The Steward leader is attenuated to the coherence of this dance, making adjustments as needed when the ecosystem changes.
Ultimately able to make micro adjustments to a systems design that considers both efficiency and deviancy in its mix.
Poetry evokes contemplation, beauty, love – in few words expressing the human condition and its vast symphony of emotions.
To imagine great poetry from the future is to image a future where humans express love, beauty, wisdom…where life is. Where nature continues its tangled majesty.
I worry for that future. I worry for the forests of the Amazon. I worry for the poets and artists who might resist being shaped by the conformity enforcers of our technology leviathans.
I worry for the creatures.
I want a poem to arrive speaking of waterfalls, moon light, lush forests and abundant life. Written in 2119. Of how humans came together realising that our home planet needed our undivided love and attention. That we might apply our extraordinary ingenuity to better all life. That we might put aside a story of extraction to extinction. Of colonisation. Of exploitation.
I ask those blinded by models crafted through domination, competition, winner takes all….to pause for just a moment and ask.. to win over whom and for what purpose, and for what consequence? And why?
I want to read the poetry from the future and fall in love with humanities brilliant generosity today.
Take a big vision, one almost no one else can see. They will call you stupid. Or their eyes will glaze over when you speak of it.
Study the field. See the future. Feel its edges. You can taste it touch it, know it.
Come back to here. Take the first step. Assess. Adjust. Repeat.
Build a team of support around you. You will need them to remind you to keep the faith when the path looks impossible, unfindable.
Do the hard inner work. Questioning all assumptions, challenging beliefs, exposing truths about you in the realm of what you did not know you did not know.
Be sure you are honest about why. Come back to this question regularly. Truth is an excavation. Layers on layers of enculturation might prevent clear sight.
Be prepared for the dips. Or chasms. Or Grand Canyons of hard and uncertain.
Be open to the miraculous. The left of field that looks innocuous and yet invites a greater possibility than you imagined. It usually arrives from the people or places you commonly dismiss.
Know that when your work is done, it may be years before it is noticed, for the world to catch up. Let this be OK.
The life of a visionary pioneer is not the easiest of paths. Pioneers lead, not for power, or fame, but for the love of crafting new, for being at the threshold of frontiers.
This, or the safety of normal.

A cross between excitement and anxiety. All mushed up.
Mind flittering from this to that, a very busy bee. Not a good state for high performance.
What is it that we are anticipating? The known, or the unknown?
The known, the return of a loved one…their absence felt like a hole in our body being.
The unknown - something long strived for, dreamed of, sculptured in the vision of our minds eye. Will it be all that we hoped?
Expectation without unravelling from assumptions can be a dangerous thing. A crap shoot. It might exceed or disappoint.
Anticipation by its nature brings us alive. The waiting…
And there she is, another sunrise, each day different, yet consistent.
Here we go…a ticket to live life with bubbles of anticipation for what might occur on this day.
The point of having an Evolutionary Purpose, a very large goal, a loon shot…includes knowing that you might not be around to see it finished.
An evolutionary purpose that transcends self in service to something larger than us ensures we do not fall back into the petty. It keeps us looking towards the distant future, the big blue sky…the possibility that we hold as worth giving almost everything.
Big goals, massively transformational purposes, forge our Souls in the fires of the journey towards.
We are shaped and refined by the experience.
We have to trust that our work will carry on when we are gone. That our choice of path is one that others also choose.
In his magnificent little book, Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse raises the question of deviancy.
If we follow the script, live in the box, conform to expectations, we impoverish the culture.
Nature is constantly emergent. The artists, the creatives, those at the edge of innovation, are the culture makers.
To bring in the emergent does not require forgetting the past, or holding it as some sacred place that we seek to return to. Rather it asks us to remember well what it taught us. To transcend its clutches while including its lessons.
Ironically, those who hold the power of influence and money, often gained from being the innovators, seek to keep the people quiet – to build conformity into the design. The conformity enforcers need us to stop asking questions, to behave. They have even built a giant and seemingly innocuous method of doing so.
Behavioural modification through the colonisation of human interiors, then repackaged to the highest bidder who turns the weapon upon those from whom they extracted, to keep them compliant.
Practise a little deviancy. Step outside the line. Bring in the wrinkle to the perfect.
That Puffins are dying on mass because they can’t find enough food to consume before their migration, and literally starve to death en route.
Heartbroken that a million more species will be extinct in the next few years.
Imagine if one of those species were humans? Perhaps it needs to come to that.
These are not just animals and critters, these are our co-inhabitants of this beautiful world, each one as necessary to a thriving ecology as we are not.
I understand that you might need work to pay your bills next week. And all the while you are suffering so from an economy that is designed intentionally to increase inequality, to have the few hold wealth that could not be spent in 4 lifetimes.
And these few, fat off the backs of the many. Either through extraction, colonisation, objectification, exploitation…
Broken, so broken, is our model that says yes to dead puffins, yes to a million more, yes to poverty and displacement, yes to turning back the boats…when the boats of climate refugees is only now a trickle, yet to become a flood.
We chose to go to the moon, and we did it within a decade, using less total technology than I am typing on.
It is not for lack of know how, or money, or technology.
It is lack of will.

Fame for fame’s sake speaks only to absence.
To be relevant is to be helpful. To lighten or lessen a current issue.
Those of us who occupy the edges might be relevant to those who are drawn to the edge.
Or…we might shine a light on a possible aspirational future that invites a deep respect for Earth and all of her creatures. In so doing we create a space, a tension, between what is and what might be.
The edge dwellers might consider the story they tell, a counterfoil to the current story of win/lose, widening polarity, domination and competition.
Universal truth is like the sun. It is hard, eventually, to ignore its beauty and generosity.
Be relevant with your words. Be relevant with your consistent persistent actions towards that aspirational future.
If we do not seek for the good, the true and the beautiful, then what?
Debatendo e identificando alternativas para interoperabilidade entre governos, em evento capitaneado pelo CONSAD, ABEP e Banco Mundial.
Dois dias com a junção perfeita de excelentes gestores, técnicos e experiências.
To find strength that we didn’t know we had.
Found in the tension between capitulation and intention.
To dig deep into our marrow and pull the unexpected resourcefulness from a place of non-existence.
Fortitude is a sure indication that the path we have chosen, or the role we said yes to, will be held against a tide of opposition and obstacles.
To know it is the path, the role.. to listen deeply to wisdom, to be open to flow, to hear and receive gifts when offered, is to become the steward around which fortitude might be required.
Stubbornness is not http://fortitude.to?utm_campaign=meetedgar&utm_medium=social&utm_source=meetedgar.com be stubborn is to shut down our willingness to deeply consider that we might be our own impediment.
Fortitude comes with an open heart, stubbornness comes with a righteousness that squeezes out presence to miracles.
Hoping, praying…that when my foot lands, or my words arrive, they will be held by ground, by witness, by appropriateness and receptivity.
I woke in the night contemplating the nature of humans. That we have the tussle of right and wrong action, good and evil, intrinsic to or ability to choose.
Does a tree wrestle with this? Or a leopard? Or do they just go about their tree and leopard life?
These are questions of the ages, worth deliberation.
My life has been dedicated to integrity, to wholeness, to truth. To the service of humans who come together to co-create something worthwhile for our collective future.
It feels right. As does being on the edge of emergence as a daily, hourly practice.
Home is the ground, the safety. The sanctuary. It provides the steady to the messy of everything else.
Tomorrow I step into the work of my life with others.
What I do know is that when I have done the preparation, and have found the still quiet place from which all of creation arises, I will open my mouth and words, surprising even to me, will flow.
Perhaps this is the art of the tree. And the leopard.
