Today, after a long time, we’re posting another Japanese woodcut.
Utagawa Hiroshige, Evening Snow at Kanbara, from the series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō", ca. 1833–34, Polychrome woodblock print; ink and color on paper.
Deep snow covers the slope of Kanbara in the evening. Fresh flakes falling on the houses, trees, and mountains create a quiet that is broken only by the implied crunch of travelers' footsteps in the snow. This scene is almost entirely imaginary; it rarely snows in the Kanbara area, in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture. From the site: metmuseum
