We found another inspiring story from our members and volunteers with the @ieeeizu student branch and the Robotel project. Robotel provides 3D printed prosthetic limbs to those in need. Here is their story in their own words:
As engineering students at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University, the most important project we are proud to be part of and the most significant project we have done so far is; Robotel. We experienced and undescribable feeling of touching someone’s life and giving a smile on her face with a robotic hand(robotel) that we delivered to beautiful Melisa. We were able to fit into photos only a part of our priceless happiness that we share with Melisa, her family and our team. When the excitement and happiness combined, we had Melisa try having a glass of water many times. She grabbed her glass and filled it with water on her own with her robot hand. She even won over her father in wrist wrestling.
We are proud of Robotel Turkey for introducing and carrying out such a meaningful project called Robotel. Robotel is an association of volunteers that makes 3D printed hands for children and adults who have deformation of hands and fingers. We hope that the Robotel - Enabling The Future projects will reach larger audiences “to give the World a helping hand“. #IEEExp#IEEEmember#IEEE#engineer#robot#robotics#3Dprinting#3D#prosthetic#project#givingback#humanity#children#kid#student#youngprofessional#professional#volunteer@ieeeorg@ieeetheinstitute@ieeespectrum@ieeesa@ieeeeducation

I broke my Marcum Showdown Troller 2.0 a long time ago and had trouble with warrantee, but kept it for all these years... now that I’m into electronics and was able to repair it, I 3D printed a new casing and made it have built in rechargeable lithium ion batteries and REAL buttons (it normally has membrane switches that get damaged) I’m so glad that I decided to keep it around for so long! #3dprinting#3ddesign#fixit#fixedit#fusion360#icefishing#marcum#flasher#showdown#electronics#repair
This weekend we did a video shoot for a BBC documentary. Edward is a bright kid from Miami who 3d printed an arm from @limbitless3d using his school's 3D printers. He then delivered it in person to a little girl in the UK named Chloe. The video first aired on BBC online. After seeing the video, we worked on getting in touch with the reporter and then with Edward and Chloe's parents. Soon after we got the ok to come on board and assist with designing a prosthetic leg for her. .
Since she was born with a form of meningitis and had to have her foot partially amputated she's been walking around with various prosthetics over the years. But issues such as weight and comfort have limited her options. She's also energetic and likes to run so her leg tends to get beat up. We aim to resolve these and other issues by working together with Edward to provide a custom, 3D printed solution for Chloe and many others like her.
If you're interested in learning more or would like to assist in this project in any way please feel free to reach out to us for more information.
Also, if @eastonlachappelle is reading this we would love to collaborate to make this project a reality.
