⠀For as long he could remember, police officers had been a large part of Jack's life. Though, they were rarely referred to as 'officers’ un-sarcastically. Cops, coppers, bulls, bullies even. For a while he looked to up them and, as with most young boys, even wanted to be one of them.

They got to help people, to save them and stop them from getting hurt. It sounded like such a rush in his small, young mind. They were there to help and, whether it be true or not, he believed them. ⠀⠀ ⠀

He was ten when that changed. ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
He couldn't remember the specifics of the day, but what he did know was that it had been slow. He had almost half a dozen papers left over and he knew his father would chew him out over it. He despised the feeling of letting his old man down, however strict he was on Jack. ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
Tonight was one of the few nights that his father had planned to leave work earlier. It only happened every other month or so, but periodically Jack and his father would take a couple hours to themselves; going on a walk around Manhattan, catching up, sometimes having a meal if it was a good day. Of course Jack got to see his father more frequently than that, but never for long periods. ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
He tugged his cap down, trying to cover more of his face in shame as he got closer to their meeting spot. As he approached, though, it became clear something was very, very wrong.
There were dozens of voices, one of which he could make out to be his father. He was yelling. His father never yelled, even when he was angry. When he was upset he got really quiet, never, ever loud like this.

Men in uniform, he counted about four or five, surrounded his father, and a small group had gathered around them to watch the scene.
His heartbeat quickened as he neared the scene, pushing through the sea of people.
A policeman raised his voice, trying to be heard over the yells of the other man. ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
